Image Usage in Books

To whom it may concern,

I am a frequent user of gplates maps, in particular the magnetic anomaly map. I am looking for information on if it is allowable to use portions of the gplates magnetic anomaly map, with citations, in a book that would be self-published in print and kindle formats. Who might I contact to request permission to publishing screengrabs of the map as figures used in a book?

Thank you, sorry if this is the wrong place, I would really like to be able to include discussion surrounding magnetic anomalies but am unsure if gplates allows using its maps in books so am seeking to find out.

Respectfully,
Steve Scully

Hi Steve,

Yes I’d say it’s allowable.

It is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License. And according to the GPlates 2.4 geodata information page

When using GPlates and the sample data to make figures for publications, we recommend citing the original data sources as indicated below.

…so you can find the appropriate citation there.

Thank you John,

That is great news, I did not realize gplates had a CC 3.0 licensed, looks like it is indeed allowed. Much appreciated!
