Is there an Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) for GPlates software or anything that falls under commerce control through the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?

We occasionally get asked this question.

GPlates doesn’t have an ECCN number. By the way, GPlates also doesn’t have any encryption capabilities (another commonly asked export compliance question).

But looking in the Commerce Control List Index, the following classification (ECCN number) could probably be used for GPlates:

7D004.g - “Display, 3D (software for)”

…with another option being:

2E003.e - “Integration software for expert systems”
